Awendaw Dining — Eat Like a Local

The restaurants are few, but they're extraordinary. The kitchens at Bulls Bay are fully stocked. And the fresh seafood comes straight off the boat. Here's your guide to eating well in Awendaw.

Small Town, Big Flavors

Let's be honest: Awendaw is not Charleston. You're not going to find fourteen artisanal cocktail bars and a farm-to-table restaurant on every corner. What you will find is something better — a handful of places that are so good, so authentic, and so deeply rooted in the Lowcountry that locals drive from Mt. Pleasant and Charleston just to eat here.

The food in Awendaw tastes like the Lowcountry is supposed to taste. The shrimp was swimming this morning. The vegetables came from a farm down the road. The recipes have been in families for generations. There are no pretenses, no Instagram walls, no $22 avocado toasts. Just incredible food made by people who care.

See Wee Restaurant

3 miles from Bulls Bay

#1 on TripAdvisor

Located in a converted 1920s general store, See Wee has been serving the Awendaw community since 1993. It's the kind of place where the floor creaks, the sweet tea comes in mason jars, and the fried shrimp is so good it makes you question every other fried shrimp you've ever eaten.

The she-crab soup is legendary — made from a great-grandmother's recipe that's been handed down through the family. It's creamy, rich, laced with sherry, and you will want to order a second bowl. Don't fight it.

The seafood comes from Carolina Seafood in McClellanville, which means it was on a boat this morning. The farm-to-table vegetables come from local growers. This isn't a marketing angle — it's just how they've always done things in Awendaw.

What to Order

  • Fried shrimp platter (the house specialty)
  • She-crab soup (great-grandmother's recipe)
  • Farm-to-table vegetable plate
  • Fresh catch of the day, any style

Sewee Outpost

3 mi

Located across Highway 17 from See Wee, the Sewee Outpost serves homemade Southern food with an emphasis on made-from-scratch biscuits that are, frankly, unreasonable. Fluffy, buttery, and large enough to use as a pillow.

They also have a disc golf course — $5 for all-day play. So the plan is: breakfast biscuits, 18 holes of disc golf, then lunch. It's the Awendaw triathlon.

Awendaw Green

3 mi

Free live music every Wednesday evening, 6-10 PM. This pet-friendly outdoor venue hosts local and regional musicians in a relaxed, community-gathering atmosphere. Bring a lawn chair, grab a drink, and let the music wash over you while the sun sets behind the trees.

It's the kind of thing that makes you realize Awendaw isn't just a place — it's a community. The locals know each other by name, the kids run around in the grass, and the music is genuinely good. Perfect for a pre-dinner outing.

Groceries & Provisions

Awendaw is a small town, and the closest full grocery store is about 10 minutes away. For a quick run, that's no problem. But if you're stocking up for a week's stay, we strongly recommend using Instacart for delivery of all supplies directly to Bulls Bay. Place your order before you arrive and have everything waiting in the fridge when you walk in.

Pro tip: If you're planning to fish, bring a cooler. The seafood you catch from the dock and Bulls Bay is going to be the freshest thing you've ever cooked. Pair it with local produce from a roadside stand on Highway 17 and you've got a Lowcountry feast that no restaurant can match.

Cooking at Bulls Bay — Two Full Kitchens

Bulls Bay has two full kitchens — one in the Pool House and one in the Top House — both fully equipped for serious cooking. Whether you're hosting a family fish fry with the day's catch or making pancakes for a crowd on Saturday morning, you've got the space and the gear to do it right.

Group meals at Bulls Bay are special. Grill oysters on the dock. Fry shrimp in the Pool House kitchen. Set up a Lowcountry boil on the outdoor burner. Eat under the live oaks with the marsh stretching out behind you. These are the meals you'll remember for decades.

The Fruit Fly Rule

Store all fruit and food in the refrigerator — not on the counter. This is the Lowcountry. Fruit flies arrive within hours of leaving a banana out, and once they move in, they're harder to evict than a bad tenant. Everything goes in the fridge. Trust us on this one.

Annual Food & Community Events

Awendaw and the surrounding area host events throughout the year that are worth planning your trip around.

Blue Crab Festival

A celebration of the Lowcountry's beloved blue crab. Local restaurants compete for the best crab dish, there's live music, and the community turns out in force. If you like crab (and you should), this is your festival.

Bulls Bay Nature Festival

May

Guided kayak tours, birding walks, fishing workshops, and nature talks. This festival celebrates the natural heritage of Bulls Bay and the Cape Romain refuge. Perfect for families and nature enthusiasts.

Youth Fishing Rodeo

June

A community fishing tournament for kids. It's wholesome, it's fun, and watching a 6-year-old catch their first fish is the kind of thing that restores your faith in humanity.

Christkindlmarkt

A German-inspired Christmas market in the Lowcountry. Handmade gifts, baked goods, local artisans, and holiday cheer. It's unexpected, it's charming, and it's the kind of event you'd never know about unless a local told you.

Book Bulls Bay and Eat Like a Local

Two full kitchens, the best seafood restaurant in the Lowcountry 3 miles down the road, and fresh fish you caught yourself from the dock. That's dining at Bulls Bay.
